Read: This wonderful piece on the making of a great movie. While talking of Kundan Shah's diploma film, Shah says, "It made me laugh and it made me think." That can be said about Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro as well - that is what the movie does to me every time I watch it.
Aside: A eureka moment while reading the piece. Back in the late 70s and early 80s there were a lot of movies whose titles ran into five/six words. Examples: Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai, Arvind Desaid Ki Ajeeb Dastaan, Mohan Joshi Haazir Ho. And no, we are not talking only of offbeat films. Remember Dulhan Wohi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki? These movies were never identified by abbreviations. While today, a movie title that has more than 2 words in it is immediately abbreviated. Reflection of the times?
